Beneish M Score Template Description
The Beneish M Score Template is an automated Excel tool designed to detect potential earnings manipulation in a company’s financial statements. Simply input a few key financial figures, and the template calculates all eight M-Score variables and delivers a clear, actionable result.
Created by Professor Messod Beneish, the M-Score uses eight financial ratios derived from a company’s accounting data to assess the likelihood of earnings manipulation. The template automates the process, allowing you to analyze financial statements quickly and accurately—results are available in just 5 to 15 minutes.
Beneish tested the model on all companies in the Compustat database from 1982 to 1992. The M-Score correctly identified 76% of manipulators while only misclassifying 17.5% of non-manipulators. Later research, including the 2007 paper The Predictable Cost of Earnings Manipulation, shows that using the M-Score as a stock selection strategy could generate a hedged return of nearly 14% per year over 1993–2003.
